This guy was a rebel! I loved his persona more than I did his work, but together they made an awesome statement.
Despite coming from wealth and privilege he chose to become a junkie and an artist in the slums of downtown Manhattan. Now I don't necessarily condone that part of his life, because he did leave behind a baby girl. People can say whatever they want about him. But I straight admired the fact that he followed his heart and didn't care what people expected from him. In my opinion, that takes balls.

On another sad note, we also recently lost Cy Twombly (7/5/11). He was one of the pivotal painters of the '60s and '70's. Through his interactions with Pop Art and Post Modern painters, such as Rauschenberg and Johns, he developed his own style of modern painting. This guy was also a rebel in his own right and his paintings were hardly accepted during his lifetime. But I think his work will become more appreciated further down the line. I really love the white spaces he used. I think that speaks volumes, more than filling it up with paint.
